Mr Mario Ovidiu OPREA

Mario-Ovidiu Oprea is Secretary General of the Senate of Romania from 1st September 2022. He has more than 18 years of experience in the Senate. He held 4 consecutive senatorial mandates from 2004 to 2020, as member of the National Liberal Party. During his successive terms, he has held, for different periods of time, important positions in the Senate leadership, including Vice President/Secretary/Quaestor of the Standing Bureau and Leader/Deputy Leader of the National Liberal Party Parliamentary Group in the Senate. From 2012 to 2020, as member of the Executive Committee of the Romanian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, he participated in numerous multilateral parliamentary diplomacy activities within the IPU and represented the Parliament of Romania at IPU sessions, as a member of the Governing Council and of the IPU Committee for UN Affairs. After retiring from politics, as Deputy Secretary General of the Senate, he managed the issues related to the administration of the institution’s patrimony (2020-2022).  Mario-Ovidiu Oprea holds a degree in Electromechanics from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (1984-1989), University of Craiova; and a degree in Law from the Faculty of Law, Spiru Haret University of Bucharest (2008-2011).   He also graduated a «National Security and Defence» course at the National Defence College (2010).     In 1996 he became a broker certified by the United Kingdom Know How Found and Intrados Group Washington D.C.   Languages: English
