Mr Geert Jan Hamilton was born on 14 April 1952. He read law at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
From 1975 to 1980 he worked as a fellow and a policy advisor at Leyden University. From 1980 until 1999 he was Legal Council to the Association of Health Insurers in the Netherlands. From 1993 to 1999 he was President of the Association Internationale de la Mutualité (AIM), the international organisation of Social Health Insurers.
From 1999 to 2006 he was Director of Legislation and Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports of the Netherlands. He was closely involved in the reform of the health insurance system in the Netherlands which was implemented per 1 January 2006.
On 4 July 2006 he was appointed Clerk (Griffier) of the ‘Eerste Kamer der Staten-Generaal’, the Senate of the Netherlands. He took office on 1 September 2006. He retired on 1 October 2018.
